The publication of Eurospital’s third Sustainability Report, covering the year 2024, highlights the tangible progress achieved by the company in progressively strengthening its commitment to sustainable development.

This year, Eurospital publishes the third edition of its Sustainability Report, a voluntary non-financial disclosure that examines the company’s business development prospects in continuity with the five ESG dimensions identified in its inaugural 2022 Report as having the greatest impact on corporate performance: economic performance and governance, employees, environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and product responsibility. This framework was subsequently expanded in the second Report, published in 2023, through the inclusion of specific Sustainability Goals.

The 2024 Sustainability Report highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability more comprehensively into its growth strategies, in alignment with Eurospital’s corporate values and its mission to contribute to people’s well-being while fostering a sustainable future for the next generations.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation Policies

Eurospital has continued to implement its energy efficiency investment plan, focusing on the self-generation of energy from renewable sources and, more broadly, on initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact. These measures include the progressive adoption of more environmentally friendly materials, waste minimisation, and the reduction of plastic consumption.

In line with these objectives, the company expanded its photovoltaic system, achieving a substantial increase in the proportion of electricity demand met through self-generated renewable energy compared with 2023. In 2024, the system covered 42% of the company’s electricity requirements, compared with 30% in the previous year, and accounted for 12% of its overall energy demand. Through renewable energy self-generation, Eurospital avoided the emission of 56.3 metric tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

The replacement of the existing chiller unit with a new system featuring a nominal cooling capacity of 403.2 kW, designed to provide summer air conditioning across all departments of the production facility, further contributed to improving energy efficiency in the company’s day-to-day operations.

In parallel, initiatives aimed at raising employee awareness and promoting best practices for reducing energy waste, such as switching off electronic devices during periods of inactivity, have played an important role. Together with regular inspections conducted by maintenance personnel, these measures have helped maintain appropriate indoor temperatures throughout the year while preventing unnecessary electricity consumption.

Putting Employees First and Fostering Social Dialogue

As a fundamental driver of both sustainability and business continuity, Eurospital’s employees have consistently been at the centre of initiatives designed to promote professional development, well-being, and active engagement, thereby strengthening an inclusive, supportive, and motivating working environment.

Employment stability has improved significantly, with the proportion of permanent employment contracts increasing from 84% in 2022 to 90% in 2024, alongside a corresponding reduction in fixed-term contracts. This represents a tangible commitment to providing secure and stable employment opportunities.

Workplace safety, the quality of the working environment, and the continuous development of professional skills and competencies remain key priorities. In 2024, Eurospital delivered almost 700 hours of technical training and occupational health and safety education.

Strengthening relationships with the local community and supporting the professional development of young peopleare also central objectives of Eurospital’s collaboration with the University of Trieste, particularly its Department of Economics, Business, Mathematics and Statistics (DEAMS). Through its support for marketing courses and the provision of corporate internship opportunities, the company enables students to gain valuable practical experience and engage directly with the professional environment.

Eurospital’s commitment to people also extends to its support for approximately 20 organisations operating in the fields of scientific research, healthcare, and assistance to patients and individuals in need, through financial contributions and in-kind donations, including product donations.

Consistent with its corporate values, and in addition to employee engagement activities involving internal communication initiatives and social events, Eurospital has introduced a new corporate volunteering programme. This initiative encourages employees to participate in activities supporting local non-profit organisations during working hours. A total of 170 hours were dedicated to volunteering activities, reflecting a corporate culture firmly grounded in ethical responsibility and solidarity.

Business Innovation

Eurospital’s ongoing commitment to investment in research and innovation represents a cornerstone of its economic and social development strategy, a defining characteristic of the company since its establishment more than 75 years ago.

Over the decades, Eurospital has consolidated its international presence through strategic collaborations with scientific institutions and universities, while maintaining the highest standards of product quality and regulatory compliance. Significant development initiatives have also been undertaken within the Diagnostics Division, including the introduction of new diagnostic tests in Molecular Biology and Gastroenterology, as well as the international expansion of turbidimetric diagnostic products for gastrointestinal diseases, particularly in South American markets.

In 2024, 7% of the Diagnostics Division’s revenue was invested in research, representing a strategic commitment that further demonstrates Eurospital’s competitiveness and innovation-driven approach, supported by partnerships with leading research institutions.

The Pharmaceutical Division also recorded business growth, reflecting Eurospital’s continued focus on anticipating evolving consumer needs and emerging market trends. Key developments included the expansion of the Personal Care product range, with new personal care solutions for both adults and children; the consolidation of established brands in their respective markets; and the strengthening of the product portfolio through commercial partnerships for the distribution of new products, including LactoSolution, Waterdrop, and Glassio.

The launch of Apromé, a new range of low-protein food products, in 2024 marked the establishment of the company’s new Special Nutrition Business Division. The product range is the result of a three-year research and development project and has received highly positive feedback from healthcare professionals specialising in nutritional therapy for individuals living with chronic kidney disease.

Building on Eurospital’s extensive expertise in the gluten-free sector, the Special Nutrition Division also encompasses Piaceri Mediterranei, the company’s long-established food brand dedicated to individuals with coeliac disease. The brand continues to achieve double-digit growth, consolidating its position as the third-leading gluten-free brand within the pharmacy distribution channel.

With a portfolio comprising more than 150 products, which will be further expanded through upcoming launches, Eurospital continues to develop innovative nutritional solutions that address the specific requirements of individuals who need specialised dietary regimens.

The achievements documented in the 2024 Sustainability Report confirm that, for Eurospital, sustainability is an essential and integral component of responsible business management. This approach reflects a corporate philosophy centred on continuous improvement and sustainable business development, with the objective of generating long-term value through collaboration with all stakeholders.

“We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to this Report. The future of healthcare is shaped by tangible actions and by the innovations that improve people’s lives, which we have been developing for over 75 years by combining ethical responsibility with business growth. Our commitment is to continue pursuing this mission, together.”
